Pay a visit to the magnificent Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the city’s largest and most iconic temple, as well as the spectacular Phra Chedi Suriyothai monument. Other impressive temples and monuments include Wat Phu Khao Thong and Phet Fortress. The city’s impressive museums like the Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre are also worth exploring.

Travel Tips When Visiting Sabah, Malaysia

Sabah tipsSome fear traveling to third world countries like Sabah, Malaysia because of false rumors. Unfortunately, most of those are not realistic claims; although, some may be true, those who have traveled to these places attest to the fact that it is safe to travel to these places, as long as you follow a few rules.

Gadgets

You will most likely need your gadgets to keep you on the right track during your tour, especially if you are traveling on your own; but this does not mean exposing your electronics in public places. You will certainly attract the eyes of the locals and some petty thieves may grab hold of your personal property, although this is seldom experience in Sabah. Avoid giving temptations to the locals and you are safe to roam its streets.

Dress Casually

It is always best to dress in casual apparel when visiting third world countries. Stay low profile by wearing jeans and shirts. Always bring an umbrella because it will come handy during unexpected rains. Europeans and Americans are easily spotted in third world countries because of their skin color and height. The least you wish to experience is to get more attention by wearing expensive clothes.

Note: Majority of the population in Sabah are Moslems, so avoid wearing shorts. It would be highly appreciated if you will stick to modest apparels or include a scarf in your luggage for a fashionable wrap around on your shoulder.

Currency Exchange

tourism in SabahAs much as possible, it is best to exchange currency in a bank, your hotel, or major shopping complexes. Credit and charge cards are accepted in department stores, but if you wish to shop at the local market for bargain sales then you should have a ringgit, the ringgit, the currency of Malaysia, for easier business transactions. Moreover, avoid discussing money matters with strangers. It is best not to be too trusty with locales and seek assistance from the tourist office and officers you find in the region. Also don’t forget to purchase a quality backpacker travel insurance just in case you do get into a spot of bother.

Transportation

You would find it more convenient to take a taxi ride to your destination, but if you wish to experience living like a local then you would consider taking the bus, ferry ride, or boat experience. Sabah Tourism is doing its best to offer the best forms of transportation to attract more tourists and they are doing an excellent job. However, once you are at the heart of the city it is best to walk around to explore the small streets of the area.

If you are invited to enter a friend’s house, be sure to remove your shoes because it is considered customary to do so. Don’t look for any nude sunbathing beaches because it is not tolerated and is heavily frowned upon. This means public display of affection is also discouraged. Avoid the use of your index finger when pointing to others, because this may be interpreted as a sign of rudeness by the locales. Expect little physical contact due to the religious tolerance in the place, but offering a handshake is acceptable.

Additional Tips

It helps to wear sunglasses, so your eyes will be protected from the sun; but it will also cloud the direction of your site. It is helpful if you will give a few smiles to friendly faces and to remember to say “terima kasih” (thank you) for the assistance provided to you.
